Celtic Woman Tour rolls again in February

The Celtic Woman Tour--featuring Irish vocalists Chloe Agnew, Lisa Kelly, Meav Ni Mhaolchatha, Orla Fallon, Mairead Nesbitt and recent addition Deirdre Shannon--returns to North America next spring for a two-month tour of performing-arts halls.

Essentially the Celtic music equivalent of the Lilith Fair, the Celtic Woman Tour is the brainchild of Sharon Browne and Dave Kavanagh of Celtic Collections, Ltd., an Ireland-based independent record label. The pair, along with musical director David Downes, conceived the tour "to showcase the talent of great Irish female singers and performers," according to the Celtic Woman website.

Not long ago, all of the Irish vocalists featured on the tour were basically unknown in North America--at least outside of Irish music circles. That changed when the TV special "Celtic Woman" debuted on PBS in March. Since then, the program has been shown on more than 200 PBS stations.

The ensemble's CD, also entitled "Celtic Woman," has been a smash hit that has topped the world music charts. The accompanying DVD has seen similar success.
