Courtney Love was named best female rock guitarist and John Fogerty was named best male rock guitarist at the fifth annual Orville H. Gibson Awards on Tuesday. The awards ceremony, named for the founder of the Gibson guitar company, also bestowed the Gibson Lifetime Achievement Award on Brian Setzer.
Love edged out fellow nominees Sheryl Crow and Jennifer Batten in the competition, while Fogerty, last year's recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, bested Joe Satriani and Jonny Lang in his category.
The winners of the competition are chosen by a poll of editors of guitar magazines.
Other winners at Tuesday's ceremony included Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur in the best female bassist category, Steve Earle for best make acoustic guitarist, Lisa Loeb for best female acoustic guitarist, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Melissa Etheridge as best male and female blues guitarists, John Scofield and Leni Stern for best male and female jazz guitarists, Jim Creegan of Barenaked Ladies for best male bassist and Mike Ward of the Wallflowers for best promising new guitarist.
