liveDaily readers honor U2, Maroon 5 in Best of 2004 poll

Rock veterans U2 and relative newcomers Maroon 5 picked up a pair of wins each in liveDaily's Best of 2004 Reader Survey--the site's first year-end poll of its readers--leading a tough pack.

U2 was named the Artist of the Year, and the band's ubiquitous single "Vertigo"--which got plenty of publicity in late 2004 via television commercials for Apple's iPod--won in the Song of the Year category.

Maroon 5--which issued its debut album in 2002, but broke through in 2004 thanks to the huge single "This Love"-- won bragging rights as Emerging Artist of the Year. The band, which opened for John Mayer over the summer, also took Opening Act of the Year.

During the course of two weeks ending Dec. 10, liveDaily's readers suggested their nominees for the Best of 2004 in 14 categories encompassing artists, albums, live performance, music-oriented websites, music-news stories and more. The votes were tallied, and those garnering the most nominations in each category were included in a separate reader poll, which concluded on Friday (12/24).

U2, producer/rapper Kanye West and country act Rascal Flatts were nominated in four categories each, but West and Rascal Flatts didn't pick up any wins in the final poll.

R&B singer Usher, who was in the running for three honors, was also shut out in the final poll, while pop-punkers Green Day , who were nominated in three categories as well, won Album of the Year for their 2004 release "American Idiot."

Winners in other major categories included the Vote for Change Tour (Arena/Large Venue Concert Tour or Event of the Year), Madonna (Live Performer of the Year) and Velvet Revolver (Club/Theater Concert Tour or Event of the Year).
