Tracklisting unveiled for Nirvana box set
The upcoming 3-CD/1-DVD Nirvana box set, "With the Lights Out," will contain 81 tracks, 68 of which were previously unreleased, according to Geffen/UME.
The songs on the three CDs--due in stores on Nov. 23--are assembled in mostly chronological order, beginning with a recording of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker" at the band's first show in 1987. The last recordings on Disc Three are solo-acoustic performances by Kurt Cobain, recorded in 1994, the same year that the singer/songwriter committed suicide.
The set contains home and rehearsal recordings of many well-known Nirvana tracks, including "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (the box set's title is taken from the song's lyric "With the lights out"), "Heart Shaped Box" and "Rape Me." Also included are acoustic renditions of "All Apologies," "Lithium" and "Sliver." Six previously unreleased radio performances (including "Anorexorcist" and "Dumb") and various other rarities are also part of the collection--among them the original Butch Vig mix of "Smells Like Teen Spirit."
The DVD features video of nine songs performed in 1998 at bassist Krist Novoselic's mother's house in Aberdeen, WA; famed indie label Sub Pop's rare "In Bloom" music video; and 10 other previously unreleased live performances. It also features Nirvana's rendition of Jacques Brel and Rod McKuen's "Seasons in the Sun," shot at a Rio de Janeiro studio.
Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth and music journalist Neil Strauss penned the liner notes, which will be included in a 60-page, full-color booklet containing a detailed chronology of the band and rare photos.
