CD Review: Various Artists, "The Passion of the Christ: Songs" (Lost Keyword)
"The film was a visual representation of what life is supposed to be for the people of God," multi-platinum, Grammy-winning artist Lauryn Hill --one of many acts who contributed to this musical appreciation of Mel Gibson's $370-million grossing film "The Passion of the Christ"--says in a statement.
Gibson's appreciation is mutual: "My kids think these guys are cool, so they must be," he says. "It means a lot to me that this group of artists dug my film and all wanted to contribute a song."
This may not be everybody's cup of deity, but this diverse collection of tunes, if anything, spotlights the range of musicians who were deeply moved by the film. It's actually a lot like any other multi-artist soundtrack, only the movie features Jesus Christ instead of college pranks or science-fiction shootouts.
From country "New Again" (Brad Paisley and Sara Evans), to hip-hop "How Many Lashes" (Kirk Franklin ), the aforementioned Hill on "The Passion," and the ethereal "Finding My Own Way" (Charlotte Church), everybody gets their turn. But ... Mark Hoppus (with MxPx on "Empire")? Well, we know the Blink 182 bassist wasn't streaking on this one.
Things settle down with the gospel "Miracle of Love" (Bebe Winans and Angie Stone), more consistent with the reflective tone of the album. What's interesting is that the mellow reverence even reaches the heavier acts. Scott Stapp 's "Relearn Love" sounds less like Creed than the entire Alter Bridge CD, and P.O.D.'s "Truly Amazing" also lands on the side of serenity.
Chances are, if you were moved by the movie, you'll appreciate the album. But if you weren't, you'll need tolerant ears to get through the wide-ranging styles and religious overtones.
