R.E.M. unveils opening acts for fall tour

Fellow Athens, GA-based bands Five Eight and Now It's Overhead are among the opening acts R.E.M. has tapped for its upcoming headlining tour, which gets underway in mid-October.

R.E.M. announced the list of supporting bands for the outing--one opener for each show--as tickets began to roll out in select markets. Local promoters are expected to continue to add new on-sale dates through the middle of September, R.E.M.'s camp announced earlier this month.

Five Eight's sixth album, which was released independently with limited distribution earlier this year, will be issued nationally on Aug. 24. The self-titled set is the group's first album since 2000's critically lauded "The Good Nurse."

Now It's Overhead issued its self-titled debut in 2001. The follow-up, titled "Fall Back Open"--which featured guest appearances by R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst--was released this spring.

Other opening acts for R.E.M.'s jaunt include Trent Dabbs, Angela McCluskey (formerly of Wild Colonials), Joseph Arthur and Charlie Mars. Details are listed in the itinerary below.

R.E.M. plans to issue its new album, "Around the Sun," on Oct. 5 in North America; the first single, "In America," is streaming at the band's website.

Prior to its headlining tour, the group will join Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band and Bright Eyes on the Vote for Change tour.
