K.D. Lang preps for launch of orchestral tour

Vocalist K.D. Lang will perform with local symphony orchestras this year during a spring/summer tour that visits more than 40 North American markets.

Word of the tour first surfaced late last year, and the itinerary has been beefed up considerably since the initial announcement.

The outing gets underway later this month in Houston, where Lang plays with the Houston Symphony. According to the Houston Symphony's general manager, it was the Houston Symphony that initially approached Lang about doing an orchestral show.

Lang and crooner Tony Bennett picked up a Grammy earlier this year, winning in the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album category for "A Wonderful World." The album, which was released in late 2002, is a tribute to the music of Louis Armstrong. Lang and Bennett supported the album with a 2002 North American tour, and a 2003 Australian outing.

"Invincible Summer," Lang's most-recent collection of new studio material, surfaced in 2000. She followed that album with 2001's "Live by Request."

In addition to her symphonic shows, Lang is also scheduled to perform two concerts--on July 3 in Boston and on July 5 in Provincetown, MA--during a cruise organized by Olivia, a travel company that markets to lesbians. The Boston-to-Montreal cruise, which will follow a mass wedding ceremony in Boston, takes place July 3-10. More information is available at Olivia's website.
