Live Review: Duran Duran in Phoenix

With one hand on his hip and the other one lackadaisically holding a microphone, Duran Duran frontman Simon LeBon walked a fine line between cool and bored at the seminal '80s band's Friday (11/28) show at the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix.

Wearing a white jacket with a dark shirt and pants, LeBon cracked nary a smile, even though the capacity crowd of about 2,000 erupted whenever he made a move from the show's beginning ("A View to a Kill") to the closing ("Rio").

It took nearly three-quarters of the show for LeBon to ease up, leading the crowd in a game of word association: He yelled "yes, yes" while the crowd was expected to respond with "no, no," leading into the song "Notorious."

LeBon's vocals were OK at best, sounding as if he was suffering from an illness. During soaring ballad "Ordinary World," he eschewed high-pitched wailing for ethereal dance moves.

On the other hand, bassist John Taylor, whose skills were often overshadowed by his fashion sense and model good looks in Duran Duran's heyday, alternately grinned and closed his eyes as he played. Taylor enthusiastically clapped through the intro to "Planet Earth," one of Duran Duran's first hits. John Taylor and guitarist Andy Taylor (no relation) pounded their instruments and jumped up and down during "Wild Boys." John Taylor even poked fun of female audience members who tried to get his attention.

"'John, John, where's the party tonight?' The party is right here," he said imitating two women in the crowd.

LeBon had his moments playing with the audience as well. He purposely wound up the crowd when he introduced the comely ballad "Come Undone."

"This song we're going to play is sort of an erotic fantasy," he said with a sly grin. During the performance, LeBon reached into the spotlight and then sucked on one of his fingers to further enthrall the audience.

The tour marks the first time in 18 years that Duran Duran's original members have taken to the road together. It is also Duran Duran's 25th anniversary.

The group used the occasion to showcase new songs, including the ballad "What Happens Tomorrow," which features the lyrics "You got to believe/it'll be all right in the end," and the rollicking "Beautiful Colours." LeBon was most animated during the new songs, jumping up and down during the choruses. During "Beautiful Colours," he stripped off his white jacket and strapped on an acoustic guitar, much to the delight of the audience.

LeBon even brought out a bit of theatrics when his group reached deep into its catalogue for "Waiting for the Night Boat." Donning a black, full-length jacket, he waved a spotlight haphazardly over his shoulders and between his legs.

The Celebrity Theatre gave a whole new meaning to "I'm on a ride and I wanna get off/but they won't slow down/the roundabout," lines from "The Reflex." The stage turns giving everyone in the 360-degree auditorium a prime view.

"They built this stage and the auditorium that revolves around it. It's making me dizzy," LeBon cracked before adding that he might fall over.

Duran Duran ended its comeback Phoenix performance on a high note with the song "Rio," during which the audience sang along with the group to the lyrics "You make me feel alive, alive, alive."
