CD Review: Dave Matthews, "Some Devil" (RCA Records)
While true Dave Matthews fans might not be surprised by the melancholy vibe of his first solo effort, those accustomed to noodle dancing and sing-a-longs might want to dig into their stash for some of his more radio-friendly efforts before popping "Some Devil" into the CD player.
But this isn't exactly a "solo" record, as Matthews has called on a tight network of musicians to round out his ensemble, including the master of the jam himself, Trey Anastasio (Phish), and longtime ax-buddy Tim Reynolds, as well as Tony Hall on bass and Brady Blade, Jr. on drums.
The album's first single, "Gravedigger," is an accurate omen to what's in store for listeners. Slow tempos, acoustic ballads, signature mumbling and plenty of percussion make this album more Sunday-morning breakfast music than a frat-party soundtrack. Just ask the gospel choir or the 45 musicians who provide the strings ensemble and the horns section on songs like "Save Me" and "Stay or Leave." However, where "Some Devil" lacks in energetic jams, it more than makes up for in its melodies, weaving Matthews' haunting voice through an intricate web of guitar play and intense songwriting.
