Rod Stewart readies second 'American Songbook' collection

Sticking with a formula that proved successful last year, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Rod Stewart is set to release his second collection of pop standards.

"The Great American Songbook: Volume II"--Stewart's follow-up to 2002's "It Had To Be You ... The Great American Songbook," which sold more than 4 million copies worldwide--is scheduled to hit stores on Oct. 21.

Among the 14 tracks Stewart covers on the new set are "I'm in the Mood for Love," "Smile," "As Time Goes By," "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Til' There was You" and "Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered," a duet with Cher that uses "the almost-never-heard original sexy lyrics," according to a J Records press release.

Like Stewart's first "American Songbook," the forthcoming album was produced by Richard Perry, Phil Ramone and Clive Davis.

In other news, a new Stewart compilation titled "Encore: The Very Best of Rod Stewart, Vol. 2," is set to reach stores on Aug. 26. The set collects tracks released between 1975 and 2001, including "Infatuation" and "Tonight I'm Yours (Don't Hurt Me)."
