Ray Charles has postponed several concert dates due to acute hip discomfort, which is now being diagnosed and treated in Los Angeles, according to his spokesperson.
The 12-time GRAMMY® winner, who is 72 years old, missed three scheduled appearances last week. He will remain off the road until Aug. 22, when he is scheduled to perform at Harrah's Casino in Escondido, Calif.
Though his publicist described the shows as postponed rather than canceled, no rescheduled dates were immediately announced.
Charles played what was billed as his 10,000th concert on May 23 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. His U.S. schedule for the remainder of the year includes shows from late August through mid-September, as well as a series of dates in December.
In May of 2002, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member released "Thanks for Bringing Love Around Again," his first new album in six years. He issued the set--which includes a new rendition of his hit "What'd I Say," a song Charles first recorded in 1959--on his own label.
