Toby Keith cleans up at CMT's Flameworthy awards
A controversial post-Sept. 11 single by self-proclaimed "angry American" Toby Keith led the field with three wins at Country Music Television's 2003 Flameworthy Video Music Awards.
Keith--who co-hosted the ceremony with model-actress Pamela Anderson--picked up awards in the Video of the Year, Cocky Video and Best Male Video categories for his single "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)."
The lyrics to the song--directed at Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda--include the lines: "And you'll be sorry that you messed with / The U S of A / 'Cause we'll put a boot in your ass / It's the American way."
"I dedicate this great award to [Secretary of State Donald] Rumsfeld and [U.S. war commander Gen.] Tommy Franks, and all the people over there [in Iraq] putting it down for us tonight," Keith said. "... God bless the USA, baby."
The Dixie Chicks , whose lead singer Natalie Maines recently told a London crowd that she as ashamed that President Bush is from her home state of Texas, were shut out despite four nominations. The crowd booed the trio each time its name was mentioned.
Johnny Cash , the subject of a Vince Gill-led tribute, won a Special Achievement Award for the video to his cover of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt." June Carter Cash accepted the award on her husband's behalf; he was released from the hospital last week after battling pneumonia.
Videos for Tim McGraw 's "She's My Kind of Rain" and Martina McBride 's "Concrete Angel" won a pair of awards each.
According to CMT, viewers cast more than 3 million votes via the Internet to choose the award winners. The ceremony was broadcast live on Monday night (4/7) from the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville.
