Given the popularity of "Beautiful Day" among Grammy voters a year ago, the dominance of the Irish rock band didn't come as a surprise. The album from which the single was culled, "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (Interscope) was not released during the 2001 qualifying period.

R&B singer-songwriter India.Arie [ tickets ], picked up seven nominations, including one in all four of the top categories: Album of the Year and Best New Artist, as well as Record of the Year and Song of the Year for the song "Video."

Fellow Grammy newcomer Alicia Keys [ tickets ], another R&B singer-songwriter, garnered six nominations, including Best New Artist and Record of the Year and Song of the Year for "Fallin'."

Conductor Pierre Boulez, who received two separate nominations in the Best Classical Album category, was nominated for six Grammys, and Alison Krauss, Brian McKnight and OutKast were nominated in five categories apiece.

T Bone Burnett, Nelly Furtado, Train, Steven Tyler (three nominations with Aerosmith and an additional individual nomination for songwriting) and Lucinda Williams are each up for four Grammys.

One new category--Best Rap/Sung Collaboration--was added to the Grammys this year, bringing the total number of categories to 101.

Recordings released from Oct. 1, 2000 through Sept. 30, 2001 were eligible for Grammy nominations. Ballots will be mailed to the 13,000 voting members of the Recording Academy on Jan. 11. The 44th Annual Grammy Awards will take place on Feb. 27 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
