Beach Boys Splinter For Spring Tour Projects

Bob Grossweiner and Jane Cohen Report: For the first time in recent memory, the Beach Boys did not tour last summer, usually an annual event. Some people have speculated that it was due to the death of founding member Carl Wilson, while others thought that the group was not drawing enough concertgoers to make a tour profitable.

Well, the Beach Boys have not gone away. In fact, there are now two Beach Boys aggregations and both have validity even if it will be really the first time a Wilson brother will not be involved (Dennis Wilson drowned in 1983).

The reclusive Brian Wilson, who threatened to tour last fall behind his solo LP, Imagination, has postponed his tour futher into the spring due to an illness in his wife's family.

The Beach Boys with founding vocalist Mike Love and Bruce Johnston are still associated with the Beach Boys' longtime manager. But the Beach Boys: Family and Friends with founding member guitarist Al Jardine, has a very curious lineup of progeny and members: Matt and Adam Jardine (Al's sons), Carnie and Wendy Wilson (Brian's daughters), Carl Benton Wilson (Dennis' son), Owen Elliot (Mama Cass' daughter), and Daryl Dragon (of The Captain and Tenille fame).

Rounding out the group are three longtime Beach Boys band members Ed Carter, Richie Connato and Billy Hinsche. Family and Friends debuted Nov. 5-11 at the MGM Grand In Las Vegas.

It appears that the schism between the group's original members is blamed on creative differences but with good vibrations and intentions on both sides. However, Mike Love has sued Brian Wilson, the Beach Boys and various members in recent years with some out-of-court settlements favoring Love. Love claimed he co-wrote some of the 30-year-old Brian Wilson chestnuts, for example, which he said he was never credited for. Although Brian denied the collaborations, Love reportedly received millions of dollars without the case being tried.
