Farm Aid returns to Indianapolis in September

The 16th annual Farm Aid concert, which benefits independent U.S. farmers, will take place on Sept. 29 at Verizon Wireless Music Center (formerly Deer Creek) in Noblesville, Ind., a suburb of Indianapolis.

The show hasn’t taken place in the Indianapolis area since 1990, when it was staged at the RCA Dome. For the past two years, Farm Aid was held at Nissan Pavilion in Bristow, Va.

"We always want to move the show around so farmers can come to the show and people can get the message," Farm Aid Executive Director Carolyn Mugar said. "There is a tremendous spirit in Indianapolis. We want to go where we're welcome, and we feel very welcome there. It is symbolic of the heartland."

Farm Aid co-founders Willie Nelson , Indiana native John Mellencamp , and Neil Young will be among this year's performers. The remaining lineup and ticketing information will be announced in the coming weeks.

In addition to Nelson, Mellencamp and Young, some of last year's performers included Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Barenaked Ladies, Arlo Guthrie, Pat Green, Alan Jackson, and Sawyer Brown.

Founded in 1985 to help raise awareness for the plight of the independent American farmer, Farm Aid claims it has donated over $15 million to more than 100 farm organizations, churches, and service agencies in 44 states.

In related news, Nelson has teamed up with New Balance for the Willie Nelson 10K for Farm Aid, a run that will take place on Oct. 21 in Austin, Texas.
