Charts: Beatles '1' stays put in top spot

After climbing back atop the album chart last week, the Beatles’ “1” (Capitol) remains in the top spot for the second week in a row and third week overall, according to industry sources. The album sold over 800,000 copies in a week that saw holiday sales surge for most of the other chart-topping albums, including the latest from reggae artist Shaggy , which bursts into the Top 10 this week.

The Beatles’ “1” moved an additional 823, 587 copies this week, according to Capitol, up from the previous week’s 670,673 units. That brings the album’s total sales to roughly 3.35 million copies since its release on Nov. 14.

Following closely behind the Beatles are Backstreet Boys, whose “Black & Blue” (Jive) stays at No. 2 this week on the strength of another 566,216 copies sold, according to Jive. The album has now sold roughly 3.4 million since its Nov. 21 release. The group has also been moving tickets to its 2001 tour at a quick clip, with most shows on the outing already sold out.

Also staying put this week is “Now That’s What I Call Music Vol. 5” (Columbia), which spends its fourth consecutive week at No. 3. The compilation features previously released material from artists such as 'NSync, Destiny's Child, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Everclear, Bon Jovi and Aaron Carter.

Creed’s “Human Clay” (Wind Up) and Britney Spears’ “Oops! … I Did It Again” (Jive) remain at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. “Human Clay” has been on the charts for well over a year now, and is enjoying its third straight week in the No. 4 position since slipping from the Top 10 several weeks ago, while “Oops! … I Did It Again” is at No. 5 for the second consecutive week since its own recent return to the Top 10.

Tim McGraw’s “Greatest Hits” (Curb) stays put at No. 6 this week. The country singer completed a successful co-headlining tour with wife Faith Hill last Tuesday (12/12) in Florida, and then underwent surgery for an emergency appendectomy on Thursday (12/14).

Shaggy’s “Hotshot” (MCA), which was has been steadily climbing the chart over the 19 weeks since its release, breaks into the Top 10 this week to land at No. 7. “Hotshot” is the follow-up to 1995’s platinum-selling “Boombastic,” which features the hit single of the same name. “It Wasn’t Me” from “Hotshot” is currently No. 2 on Billboard’s latest Hot 100 singles chart.

Limp Bizkit’s “Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water” (Flip/Interscope) hangs at No. 8 for the second week in row, followed by ‘NSync’s “No Strings Attached” (Jive), which moves up a notch to No. 9.

Welsh soprano Charlotte Church rounds out the Top 10 with “Dream a Dream” (Sony Classics), a 19-track album that features the 13-year-old delivering renditions of classic holiday songs.

This week’s highest debut comes from Xzibit, whose “Restless” (Loud) clocks in at No. 14. Tool’s “Salival” (Volcano) 2-CD and VHS/DVD box-set, meanwhile, debuts at No. 38.
