Creed, Metallica, Chili Peppers score big at first My VH1 Awards

Creed walked away from the first My VH1 Music Awards on Thursday night (11/30) with a total of four trophies, the most garnered by any artist. Other multiple-award winners included Faith Hill , Carlos Santana , Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica . All of the event’s categories and winners were determined by votes cast in a VH1 online poll.

Riding high on the success of its 1999 release, “Human Clay” (Wind Up), Creed picked up awards in the Welcome to the Big Time!, Group of the Year, Song of the Year (“Higher”) and 2 for 2 (1997’s “My Own Prison” and 1999’s “Human Clay”) categories. The group also delivered a live performance at the end of the show, during which it performed its hit single “What If” from “Human Clay.”

Faith Hill trailed closely behind Creed with three awards, including Woman of the Year. She also picked up the trophy for the Sexxxiest Video for “Breathe”--the title-track from the singer’s most recent album--and the off-beat You Want Fries With That Album? award for her Pepsi advertisements. Hill was not on hand to accept, as she and husband Tim McGraw were in New Jersey for the latest stop on their co-headlining tour.

Clocking in with a pair of awards each were Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Metallica was crowned in the Gods of Thunder and Best Stage Spectacle categories, the latter of which was based on the group’s live performance with the Michael Kamen-led San Francisco Symphony Orchestra on the “S&M” (Elektra) album and video. The Chili Peppers, meanwhile, scored the Must-Have Album award for “Californication” (Warner Bros.), and the Pushing the Envelope Video award for that album’s title-track.

Carlos Santana also snagged a pair of trophies. The guitarist was dubbed Man of the Year, while his hit-single “Smooth”--from his hugely successful comeback album “Supernatural” (Arista)--got the tongue-in-cheek Your Song Kicked Ass but Was Played Too Damn Much award.

Other notable awards went to Bon Jovi for the “It’s My Life” video, which picked up the Video of the Year Award, Robbie Williams for Best U.K. Act, and Dave Matthews Band for Best Live Act.

The My VH1 Awards featured live performances from U2, Christina Aguilera, Metallica, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bon Jovi, No Doubt, Creed and Metallica. In keeping with the show’s online-voting theme, Metallica performed “Fade to Black” from its 1984 release, “Ride the Lightening” (Elektra), a song selected by users via an online poll.
