Eagles download offer gets grounded

The Eagles , who recently announced plans to make 12 live tracks from their upcoming box set available as free downloads on the Internet, have been forced to pull eight of the songs from that offer “due to unforeseen publishing licensing problems,” according to the group’s publicist.

"The Eagles: Selected Works 1972-1999" (Elektra), a 4-CD box set, came out on Nov. 14. The fourth CD is a collection of 12 live tracks. The group originally intended to make all 12 live tracks available as free downloads. Now, only "Hotel California," "Funky New Year," “Take It to the Limit" and "Those Shoes" will be offered, according to a label spokesperson.

Prior to the box set's release, band representatives had stressed that, because the group is not currently signed to a record label, it could avoid any complications that might prevent it from giving away the 12 songs.

Both Tom Petty and the Offspring ran into problems with their record labels when trying to offer free downloads of their music.
