New Releases, Oct. 31: U2, Godsmack, Jay-Z, Yoakam, more

U2 leads off Halloween-day releases with “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” (Interscope), the group’s first batch of new material since 1997’s “Pop” (Island). The album follows the band’s 1998 compilation “Best of 1980-1990” (Island).

In contrast to much of the material on “Pop,” “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” reportedly finds the band returning to a less techno-inspired sound, as evidenced on the first single, “Beautiful Day.” The track is currently No. 1 on trade publication Radio & Records’ adult alternative national radio-airplay chart.

The group achieved its greatest commercial success with its 1987 album, “The Joshua Tree” (Island), which has shipped over 10 million copies, according to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The group’s 1991 album, “Achtung Baby,” was also a top seller, and has shipped over 8 million copies to date, according to the RIAA. Both 1993’s “Zooropa” and “Pop” were met with mixed reviews from fans and critics alike, however, and have shipped 2 million copies each to date, according to the RIAA.

Last month, the group marked the release of the single by performing on the rooftop of the Dublin, Ireland, hotel that the band owns. The group plans to embark on a world tour in support of “All That You Can’t Leave Behind” in March of 2001.

Godsmack follows its multi-platinum debut with the release of “Awake” (Universal) this week. The Halloween release date likely has something to do with frontman Sully Erna’s devotion to the Wiccan religion. The title track from the group’s latest disc is climbing Radio & Records active rock national airplay chart, coming in at No. 6 this week, up from No. 8 last week.

At 12:01 a.m. on Monday (10/30), MTV began a 24-hour online listening party at which users can preview Godsmack’s new album in its entirety. The group will also be participating in an online chat at the site on Monday at 5pm PT, 8pm ET.

“Godsmack,” the group’s 1998 debut, was certified in August by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for shipping over three million copies since its release. The album peaked at No. 22 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and featured the hit singles “Keep Away,” “Whatever” and “Voodoo.”

Beginning in November, Godsmack will join the Limp Bizkit-led Anger Management tour.

Jay-Z drops “Roc la Familia: The Dynasty” (Roc-a-Fella/Def Jam) this week, the follow-up to his double-platinum 1999 album, “Vol. 3: Life and Times of S. Carter.” The new album’s 16-tracks include guest appearances by Snoop Dogg (“Get Your Mind Right Mami”), Scarface (“This Can’t Be Life”) and R. Kelly (“Guilty Until Proven Innocent’). The album’s first single, “I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)” sits at No. 25 on Radio & Records urban chart, up from No. 45 the previous week.

To mark the release of the new disc, Jay-Z plans to participate in an online chat at his Roc-a-Fella Records website on Tuesday night (10/31).

“Vol. 2: Hard Knock Life” has been Jay-Z’s most successful album to date. The disc was certified in May for shipping over 5 million copies since its 1998 release.

“Tomorrow’s Sounds Today” (Reprise), the latest from Dwight Yoakam, lands in stores this week, and is the country artist’s second album this year. In May, Yoakam released “dwightyoakamacoustic.net” (Reprise), which featured acoustic performances of 25 of his previously released songs. “Tomorrow’s Sounds Today” comprises 14 tracks, and features a guest appearance by Buck Owens, with whom Yoakam has collaborated in the past.

Yoakam spent much of this year on tour, the most recent leg of which wrapped up in Texas earlier this month. More dates in support of Yoakam’s new disc are expected. A streaming webcast of a previously recorded July Yoakam concert is currently being offered via Yahoo!, according to Yoakam’s official website.

Though Adam Sandler’s forthcoming flick “Little Nicky” reportedly features an appearance by Ozzy Osbourne, the movie’s soundtrack--delivered by Maverick this week--does not. It does, however, feature a compilation of heavy tunes from acts including Cypress Hill (“Rock Superstar”), P.O.D. (“School of Hard Knocks”), Deftones (“Change” and an acoustic version of “Be Quiet and Drive”), Filter (“Take a Picture”) and Disturbed (“Stupify” remix).
