"Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavored Water" (Flip/Interscope), the latest album from Limp Bizkit , debuts at No. 1 this week--as expected--after selling over one million copies, according to Interscope Records. The album becomes the fourth this year to crack the one-million mark during its debut week.
Sales of 1,054,511 copies give "Chocolate Starfish" the fourth-place rank for the highest-selling debut of 2000, behind ‘NSync’s "No Strings Attached" (2.4 million copies in its first week), Eminem ’s "The Marshall Mathers LP" (1.76 million copies in its first week) and Britney Spears ’ "Oops! ... I Did It Again" (1.3 million copies in its first week). All four acts are staples on MTV’s "Total Request Live" program.
In addition to a release-day appearance on "TRL," Limp Bizkit helped spur sales of its new disc by announcing last month that random copies of the disc’s first pressing would contain gold CDs and laminates entitling the purchaser to one of several prizes, including backstage passes to the band’s shows for the life of the group.
Limp Bizkit’s chart-topping debut pushes Ja Rule’s "Rule 3:36" (Def Jam) down a spot to No. 2 this week, which in turn bumps Nelly’s "Country Grammar" (Universal) down to No. 3. Atlanta-based rapper Ludacris follows at No. 4 with his Top 10 debut, "Back for the First Time" (Def Jam).
Creed’s "Human Clay" (Wind Up) continues to hold strong after 56 weeks on the chart, ending up at No. 5 this week. The Baha Men’s "Who Let the Dogs Out" (S-Curve), meanwhile, continues its climb up the chart to finish at No. 6, up from No. 7 last week. Sales of that album have been driven by the unlikely success of the title track, which has become this year’s "Macarena" and is being used extensively during breaks at sporting events, including the current World Series.
Mystikal’s "Let’s Get Ready" (Jive) drops from No. 3 to No. 7 this week, and is followed at No. 8 by 98 Degrees’ "Revelation" (Universal), down from No. 5 last week.
"Music" (Warner Bros.), the latest from Madonna, begins its slide out of the Top 10 with a dip from No. 6 last week to No. 9 this week, while 3 Doors Down’s "Better Life" (Universal) continues to cling to the lower rungs of the Top 10 at No. 10 in its 37th week of release. Radiohead's "Kid A" (Capitol), meanwhile, ducks out of the Top 10 and lands at No. 14 after spending last week in the No. 10 spot, and debuting at No. 1 two weeks ago.
Falling short of the Top 10 but debuting strongly this week are "Reflection Eternal" (Rawkus) from Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek at No. 17, and "Eat at Whitey’s" (Tommy Boy), the latest from Everlast, which clocks in at No. 20.
