Neil Diamond will be honored Feb, 9 as the 2009 MusiCares Person of the Year. The annual Grammy Week gala and concert honoring Diamond will be held in Los Angeles two days prior to the 51st Annual Grammy Awards.
Proceeds from the annual event will benefit MusiCares, which provides assistance for people in the music business during times of need. Services and resources provided by MusiCares cover a wide range of financial, medical and personal emergencies, including alcohol and drug treatment.
According to a statement, Diamond is being honored in recognition of his exceptional artistic achievements as well as his philanthropic work, which has included many generous charitable donations over the years. Recently, Diamond has been donating 100 percent of merchandise sales from his October concerts in Houston, Dallas and Oklahoma City to the hurricane relief efforts in Texas for areas ravaged by Hurricane Ike.
The 2009 MusiCares Person of the Year gala begins with a special reception and silent auction that will offer an exclusive selection of luxury items, VIP experiences and celebrity memorabilia. The event also will feature an online auction which will broadcast live worldwide on Auction Network and will allow real-time interactive bidding.
The auction will be followed by a gala dinner, the award presentation and a "star-studded" tribute concert.
