Bon Jovi To End Wembley's Concert History
Bon Jovi is set to perform at London’s Wembley arena on Saturday (8/19) and Sunday (8/20) nights. The group--currently on a European tour in support of its latest album “Crush”--will be the last act to perform at the historic venue before it is demolished to make way for a more modernized structure.
According to Wembley Stadium’s official website, the venue first began hosting events in 1923, and did not feature a concert until August 1972, when The London Rock and Roll Show took place, a bill that featured Bill Haley and the Comets, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard and Chuck Berry. In September 1977, Crosby, Stills and Nash became the first single-act musical bill ever featured at the venue.
Two of the stadium’s most notable musical milestones were 1985's LiveAid benefit concert and 1992's Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert.
According to venue statistics, Michael Jackson has the distinction of being the musical artist who has performed the most dates at Wembley, having been seen by well over a million fans since first performing there in 1988.
The new 90,000-seat stadium is scheduled to open in 2003.
