INXS Survivors To Tour New Zealand With New Frontman

The surviving members of INXS have scheduled a short series of concerts in New Zealand and are doing nothing to quell growing speculation that the band may attempt to resurrect itself on a more permanent basis. “…The future of INXS is under review,” the band said in a statement, adding that some Australian dates are possible.

Jon Stevens--a member of the Australian heavy metal outfit Noiseworks during the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, will be the “guest vocalist” for INXS when the band opens the five-city tour on Aug. 16. Stevens fronted the band in May during an anniversary celebration for the Mercury Lounge in Melbourne, Australia. Two weeks later, Stevens was again singing for INXS at the Sydney club Metro.

“It was clear to all who attended the gigs that there was a special chemistry on stage between the band and Jon, and that INXS were playing better than ever,” the band’s statement said.

The tour will open with warm-up shows at a 1,000-capacity theater in Jindabyne on Aug. 16 and 17. Four club shows will follow in Palmerston (8/20), Wellington (8/22), Auckland (8/23) and Christchurch (8/25). More details are available on the band’s official website.

Michael Hutchence, the original INXS singer, committed suicide in 1997.
