MTV has counted its first round of fan votes and revealed the nominees for Best Female Video and Best Male Video for the 25th annual Video Music Awards.
In the female category, the Moon Man will go to either Britney Spears ("Piece of Me"), Mariah Carey ("Touch My Body"), Rihanna ("Take a Bow"), Jordin Sparks ("No Air") or newcomer Katy Perry ("I Kissed a Girl"). Men vying for the prize are Usher ("Love In This Club"), Chris Brown ("With You"), Lil Wayne ("Lollipop"), T.I. ("No Matter What") and Flo Rida ("Low").
This year, MTV is letting viewers help decide the nominees in each VMA category. On Friday nights, the music network announces two new categories and fans can vote via the VMA website
or their Verizon Wireless mobile phone. The results are announced the following week.
Categories currently open for voting are Best Hip-Hip Video and Best Pop Video. Those still to come include Video of the Year, Best Rock Video, Best New Artist and Best Dancing in a Video.
The 2008 MTV Video Music Awards will return to the Los Angeles-area for the first time in a decade. The show is set to air live Sept. 7 from the Paramount Pictures lot in Hollywood with British comedian/actor Russell Brand taking on hosting duties.
Tween-pop phenomenons the Jonas Brothers are scheduled to hit the VMA stage for the first time, performing a song from their forthcoming album, "A Little Bit Longer," which is due Aug. 12.
Presenters and additional performers will be announced in the coming weeks.
