Alejandro Escovedo unleashes 'Animal' on summer outing

Singer/songwriter Alejandro Escovedo will tour this summer behind the forthcoming "Real Animal," his ninth studio album as a solo artist.

The performer will kick off the summer outing June 7 in Lawrence, KS, with an appearance at the Wakarusa Music Festival. The trek stretches from mid-June to late August; details are below.

"Real Animal," due in stores June 24, features 13 tracks and was produced by legendary studio hand Tony Visconti (David Bowie, T Rex).

"The inspiration for this record really is my life in music and the characters that I've known in and throughout that life. It's also about how music helped me survive that life," Escovedo said in a press statement.

The set follows 2006's "The Boxing Mirror," which was produced by The Velvet Underground's John Cale and, at the time, represented Escovedo's first album of new material in six years.

Escovedo, who boasts three percussionists in his family--brothers Coke and Pete Escovedo and niece (and famous Prince collaborator) Sheila E.--began his musical career in the late '70s as a member of San Francisco punk progenitors The Nuns. He helped found groundbreaking cow-punk act Rank and File in the '80s before beginning his own solo career.
