Green Day
"From Sweet Children to American Idiots"
(Koch)
Alt-rock icons Green Day soared from angst-ridden underground punk kids to the voice of a misunderstood generation with their brash mixture of punk-pop and lyrics covering everything from females to the ennui of suburbia. Released March 4, this two-disc DVD explores the early days of frontman Billie Joe Armstrong and bassist Mike Dirnt--in particular their late '80s band, Sweet Children--through Green Day's rise to stardom and the success of their most recent full-length release, 2004's "American Idiot."
Black Sabbath
"The Dio Years"
(Rhino)
In 1979, Black Sabbath bid Ozzy Osbourne goodbye and welcomed former Rainbow frontman Ronnie James Dio to the influential heavy metal band's line-up. This significant alteration led to a sonic change in Black Sabbath's music for Dio's three-year reign, all of which is chronicled in this two-disc set, appropriately titled "The Dio Years," which hit shelves March 11. Along with 16 tracks created during this time period, the DVD/CD set also features three new songs recorded in 2006 and two live videos, "Neon Knights" and "Die Young," from the '80s.
The Beatles
"Composing the Beatles Songbook: Lennon and McCartney 1957-1965" (Pride/MVD Audio)
True Beatles fans will appreciate this documentary-style inside look into the dynamics of John Lennon and Paul McCartney as partnered composers. Beginning from the time of their initial meeting in 1957 and spanning nearly a decade, this in-depth 79-minute montage of classic performances, rare footage and scholastic commentary from musicologists and others familiar with the British icons analyzes their musical connection. The DVD becomes available March 18.
Johnny Cash
"The Line: Walking With a Legend"
(Well Go USA)
This short, 55-minute DVD focuses on one of the 20th century's most influential musicians, Johnny Cash. Alongside rare photographs and some telling truths about the country singer/songwriter, the DVD also features 22 Cash performances, including "Heartbreak Hotel," "A Boy Named Sue," "Ring of Fire" and "Give My Love to Rose." Fans can pick up a copy at retailers March 18.
Lindsey Buckingham
"Live at the Bass Performance Hall"
(Reprise)
Made famous by his guitar and vocal work alongside Stevie Nicks in the ever-popular Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham will soon be celebrating the release of his first live solo DVD, out March 25. Recorded in late January 2007 at Fort Worth's Bass Performance Hall, the 90-minute disc features performances of "Trouble," "Holiday Road," "Tusk," "Castaway Dreams" and "Never Going Back," as well as nine other tracks.
