You oughta know Brandi Carlile

Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile has been tapped to headline this year's VH1 "You Oughta Know" tour, which will visit clubs and theaters all over the US and a couple in Canada this fall.

Fellow Seattle-area native Alison Sudol, a.k.a. A Fine Frenzy , will serve as special guest on the outing, which kicks off Sept. 6 in Eugene, OR. The artists will play in more than 30 cities, with a Nov. 2 finale scheduled in Seattle. Two-night stands are booked in New York City and West Hollywood, CA.

Carlile, who has been trading off headlining shows with appearances opening for the Indigo Girls since early June, will play a few more gigs with the Girls and a few with Chris Isaak before launching the VH1 trek. Her full itinerary is listed below.

Carlile can also be seen on the small screen in DirecTV's Concert Series through the end of August. Broadcast times are listed in the blog section of her MySpace page.

The singer, whose music spans genres from alt-country to rock to folk to pop, released her latest album, "The Story," in April. The set, produced by Grammy-winner T Bone Burnett (Counting Crows, Roy Orbison), was recorded live in the studio to capture the raw intensity of Carlile's live shows.

"When you record to tape, it forces you not to dwell on small imperfections and keep a lot of the things you would usually edit out ... like a weird breath or a strangely sharp note," Carlile explained in her bio. "When I listen back and hear those things now, I'm glad we didn't take them out because they give this album a real human character."

One of the songs on the record, "Cannonball," features Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers. Carlile also made an appearance on the Girls' latest album, "Despite Our Differences."

"The Story" follows Carlile's 2005 self-titled debut on Columbia Records, which garnered critical acclaim and landed on Rolling Stone's list of "10 Artists to Watch in 2005." The singer found an even wider audience when ABC-TV's hit drama "Grey's Anatomy" showcased three songs from the debut.
