The nominees are in for this year's MTV Video Music Awards, which have Justin Timberlake and Beyonce leading the pack with seven nods apiece.
They are followed by Kanye West and Rihanna , who each scored five nominations, and newcomer Amy Winehouse , who's up for three.
In the Video of the Year category, Timberlake's "What Goes Around ... Comes Around" will face off with Beyonce's "Irreplaceable," West's "Stronger," Rihanna's "Umbrella," Winehouse's "Rehab" and French electro duo Justice's "D.A.N.C.E." MTV called the latter nominee "perhaps the biggest shock of the entire nominations field."
Timberlake also picked up nods in a trifecta of brand-new categories: Male Artist of the Year, Most Earthshattering Collaboration (for "SexyBack" with Timbaland) and Quadruple Threat of the Year, which is awarded to those who excel in multiple fields.
Beyonce benefited from new categories, as well, landing nominations for Female Artist of the Year, Earthshattering Collaboration (for "Beautiful Liar" with Shakira) and Quadruple Threat.
Rounding out the Male Artist category are West, Akon , T.I. and Robin Thicke. Beyonce is competing with Winehouse, Rihanna, Fergie and Nelly Furtado for Female Artist of the Year.
Winehouse, whose sophomore set, "Back to Black," marked her first US release, is also up for Best New Artist alongside Carrie Underwood , Gym Class Heroes , Lily Allen, and Peter Bjorn and John. The winner of that category will be determined by fans, who can vote for their favorites at MTV's website.
Gym Class Heroes are also vying for Best Group along with Fall Out Boy , Linkin Park, Maroon 5 and White Stripes.
The full list of nominees is available at MTV's website.
The 24th annual MTV Video Music Awards ceremony will air live Sept. 9 from Las Vegas' Palms Casino Resort. Acts scheduled to perform include Timberlake, West, Rihanna, Winehouse, Allen, Timbaland, Fall Out Boy, Chris Brown and the Foo Fighters.
Timbaland will serve as the evening's "musical maestro," and he and Timberlake will host their own party at the Palms Fantasy Suites, according to MTV.
