Ratdog puts guitarist on the DL

Bob Weir's Ratdog will soon set out on its summer trek--which includes new dates with The Allman Brothers Band --minus guitarist Mark Karan, who is being treated for a possibly cancerous lump on his neck.

Karan revealed the situation recently on his website, adding that he would try various alternative healing methods before resorting to "Western style surgery."

Weir responded to the absence in his lineup by tapping Steve Kimock to fill in during the summer outing, which includes a previously reported stretch with one-man jammer Keller Williams, as well as a new August run with the Allmans.

"We'll be in touch with Mark daily, and if his docs cut him loose, we'll bring him out," Weir said in a press release. "The show must go on, I think, in everyone's best interest."

The band will kick off its summer run July 5 at Milwaukee's Summerfest, with the first co-headlining show with Williams following July 7 in Atlanta.

After its Aug. 11 appearance at the three-day Gathering of the Vibes festival in Bridgeport, CT, the group will launch its run with the Allman Brothers Band Aug. 14 in Bristow, VA, the first of seven Allman dates in August. The itinerary is included below.
