Def Leppard rocks the summer

Veteran rockers Def Leppard are prepping for a major summer tour that will hit a host of amphitheaters and festivals in 50 cities across North America.

The outing kicks off June 27 in Cincinnati and stretches through a Sept. 30 finale in Edmonton, Alberta. Dates are listed below.

Styx and Foreigner are also scheduled to appear on select shows. Details about those gigs will be available at Def Leppard's website in the near future.

Def Leppard's 2006 summer tour with Journey was extended three times due to ticket demand, according to a press release. The outing scored the trophy for Most Creative Tour Package at the 2006 Concert Industry Awards and came in at No. 14 on the list of top tours for the year, as reported by industry publication Pollstar.

"Yeah," Def Leppard's latest album, is a tribute to band heroes including The Kinks, Badfinger, T. Rex, David Bowie, Sweet, Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople, Free, The Faces and Thin Lizzy, among others. The set, released last May, features the group's rendition of David Essex's "Rock On," the music video for which made it into the Top 10 on VH1.

Also last year, Def Leppard released a limited-edition version of its multi-platinum 1987 album, "Hysteria."

The band is on a short list of artists who have seen an album achieve Diamond certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, signifying sales of 10 million copies. Leppard has scored the honor twice: with 1983's "Pyromania" and again with "Hysteria." Both of those sets were recently named in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's "Definitive 200"--a list of 200 albums that the Hall says every music lover should own.

Def Leppard has sold more than 65 million records worldwide, according to a statement. A posting at the band's website says the rockers are currently working on their 12th studio album.
