Shania Twain Named ACM’s Entertainer Of The Year
Lonestar, Faith Hill and Dixie Chicks took home a pair of trophies apiece at the Academy of Country Music Awards, but Shania Twain --whose “Come On Over” is the top-selling country album in history--won the Entertainer of the Year award.
Twain, who was said to be at home in Switzerland, wasn’t present to receive her “Hat.” (Earlier this year, she won two Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards, and she wasn’t on hand to accept those, either.)
Faith Hill was honored in the Top Female Vocalist category and won an award for her “Breathe” video. Her husband Tim McGraw was named Top Male Vocalist.
The Dixie Chicks, who led the field with five nominations, won in the Top Vocal Duo or Group category and in the Album of the Year category for their Grammy-winner “Fly.”
The Lonestar single “Amazed,” which reached No. 1 on the pop charts, landed the group prizes in the Song of the Year and Single Record of the Year categories.
This year’s ceremony took place at the Universal Amphitheatre in Universal City, Calif., and was hosted by Dolly Parton. Parton, Martina McBride, Patty Loveless and the Judds sang “Stand by Your Man” during a tribute to Tammy Wynette, who was honored posthumously with the Pioneer Award.
