Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler, 58, reportedly was diagnosed three years ago with hepatitis C, an infection that could lead to fatal liver damage.
In an interview that aired Monday (9/25), Tyler told Nancy O'Dell of the television tabloid show "Access Hollywood" that three years ago, he underwent a year-long regimen of prescriptions, as well as injections of the powerful antiviral drug interferon.
"I've been pretty quiet about this," Tyler said. "You know, it really hurt. It was a bad, bad period."
Tyler said that the hepatitis C virus is now "nonexistent in my bloodstream ... where it's like a complete cure."
The singer said he plans to speak out about hepatitis C in the future to help raise awareness of the disease, which has infected an estimated 4.5 million Americans.
Aerosmith is currently touring North America with Motley Crue on a tour dubbed "The Route of All Evil." A new Aerosmith best-of set, dubbed "Devil's Got a New Disguise," is due in stores Oct. 10.
