A memorial stone commemorating Joy Division singer Ian Curtis, who committed suicide in May 1980, has been stolen from a Cheshire, England, cemetery, according to The Telegraph UK news site.
Associates of the singer have speculated the stone was taken by a fan as "sick souvenir." Authorities, however, have no apparent leads in the case. A borough council spokesperson told the newspaper he hopes a public appeal will inspire the thief either to return the memorial to the cemetery or leave it at the nearest police station.
An inscription on the stone reads: "Ian Curtis 18 – 5 – 80." The stone also is engraved with the words from a well-known Joy Division song: "Love Will Tear Us Apart."
