Todd Rundgren tours 'Arena' rock
Multi-faceted singer/songwriter Todd Rundgren is hitting the road this fall to support his first album of original material in four years.
So far, the tour is set to launch Oct. 1 in Seattle and visit US cites from coast to coast through mid-month. Rundgren will spend November in Europe and return to the states for a couple of late-December performances, and more shows are expected, according to a press release. Domestic dates are listed below and those overseas can be found at the artist's MySpace page.
Rundgren's forthcoming release, "Arena," is said to showcase his unique songwriting style and capture the essence and energy of old-school arena rock.
"I found myself just going out and doing this sort of guerrilla guitar quartet thing around the country and around Canada," Rundgren explained in a statement, "so when it came time to make a record, I thought maybe I'll just continue in that vein and write something that is appropriate to the guitar, since the fans seem to be enjoying it so much."
One of the guitar-driven tunes, "Mountaintop," is streaming at Rundgren's MySpace page. The album is due Sept. 30 via newly launched music venture Hi Fi Recordings.
Rundgren's most recent studio album, 2004's "Liars," marked his first set of new material in more than a decade. Between records, he's toured with The New Cars and recorded a few tracks for that band's live greatest-hits album, "It's Alive."
The songwriter, producer, computer software developer and video pioneer has been on the cutting-edge of music and video technology since the '70s. He was dubbed "Rock's New Wunderkind" upon the 1972 release of his seminal album, "Something/Anything?," on which he plays all the instruments, sings all the vocal parts and acts as his own producer.
Rundgren scored mainstream success with '70s and '80s hits including "I Saw the Light," "Hello It's Me," "Can We Still Be Friends" and "Bang the Drum." From there, he formed the prog-rock group Utopia to explore the fusing of technology with creativity.
Rundgren has also been an in-demand producer over the years, working on albums by Patti Smith, Cheap Trick, Psychedelic Furs, Meatloaf, XTC, Grand Funk Railroad, and Hall and Oates.
