Shiny Toy Guns polish up new material

Shiny Toy Guns fans can expect the band to drop a musical "atomic bomb" in the fall, according to bassist/keyboardist Jeremy Dawson.

"The big atomic bomb that we're going to drop this fall is [the single] 'Don't Cry Out,' with an amazing new video," Dawson told LiveDaily. "There's also going to be a group of eight or nine different remixes, including those by bands like The Cure."

Dawson said he wasn't sure which song The Cure's Robert Smith was going to remix; the band is leaving it up to the alternative hero. Nevertheless, Dawson said, it's a thrill.

"It's basically unthinkable. They're a song-driven, melodic band, and it's the ultimate honor, in my opinion. They are some great people. I'm really looking forward to seeing what he wants to do with it."

Los Angeles' Shiny Toy Guns are touring in support of their debut album, "We Are Pilots," which features the synth-happy pop song "Le Disko." Dawson admitted that, at first, he was slightly embarrassed that he'd written such a poppy song.

"We used to have a bass player, and him and I worked on the song and it instantly jelled," Dawson said. "I called Carah [Faye Charnow, lead singer]; Carah runs over and sings it in one cut. We were like, 'Oh my gosh, we just wrote a pop song. We're dorks. Let's go jump off a building.'

"It's sort of a reflection of this really, really cool club at the time, in Hollywood, called 82 Le Disko. It's actually been reignited in L.A. Carah would go there a lot, too. It was the cool indie dance rock electro party in Hollywood in 2003-2004. It's a reflection of that scene. All the girls going out and taking over the club. They were basically at their command. There was a big group of Orange County and L.A. girls dressed up from head to toe. You'd walk in and see all the stars at the club. That's what 'Le Disko's' about. Whether you have school or work--whatever you do all week--there's a night or a moment when you release that and you're a queen for a night. It's a real thing that people feel. This song popped out, and, damn, I didn't know what it was going to do. I didn't know it would be on a million TV shows. It's a little different than the rest of the record, but it's still Shiny Toy Guns. It's just an element of the band."

Dawson said the different sounds on the album--which range from the pop of "Le Disko" to the cinematic "When They Came For Us"--are derived from the fact that the members of Shiny Toy Guns(Dawson, Charnow, vocalist/guitarist Chad Petree and drummer Mikey Martin) are four very different people.

"Chad and I are the primary writers of the records. We come from such a jagged, diverse background of writing and producing. We charge every shade of white, blue, black, red, purple of music. It's something that made us really, really happy. It makes other people really happy and it's lots of fun to play and record. The sum of all those parts became the whole of Shiny Toy Guns."
