Pavement reunion set for 2010

Yesterday (9/16), rumors of a Pavement reunion--as they have many times in recent years--surfaced again. Today (9/17), they were confirmed. The seminal 1990's indie-rock band will reunite for dates around the world in 2010, according to a statement issued by Matador Records.

The label confirmed that one of Pavement's "reunion" shows will be a New York performance on Sept. 21, 2010, at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. "Things worked out really well when Diana Ross played Central Park in 1983, and we have no reason to suspect Pavement's return to the live arena won't generate similar headlines," the label said, citing an appropriately random reference.

Pavement formed in 1989 in Stockton, CA, by Stephan Malkmus and Scott Kannberg. The band's debut album, "Slanted and Enchanted," was released commercially in 1992. The group's critically lauded discography also includes 1994's "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain," 1995's "Wowee Zowee," 1997's "Brighten the Corners" and 1999's "Terror Twilight."

The band's indie releases have, in the eyes of many, come to define the blueprint for independent rock over the past generation. As a reminder, Matador plans to release a compilation of the group's work sometime next year.

Despite Pavement's plans to perform in 2010, the label advises that the outing is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.

Pavement's last concert was on Nov. 20, 1999, at Brixton Academy in London. During the show, lead singer Malkmus reportedly had a pair of handcuffs attached to his microphone stand to symbolize the confines of being in a band.

About two weeks later, Pavement issued a statement that read: "Pavement are retiring for the forseeable future to: 1. Start families 2. Sail around the world 3. Get into the computer industry 4. Dance 5. Get some attention."

Pre-sales for the 2010 concerts begin Friday (9/18) and a general on-sale is scheduled for Sept. 25. Additional information about the shows, as well as details about band members' individual projects can be found at the Matador website.
