Mission of Burma plots road trip behind new album

Veteran indie rockers Mission of Burma will hit the road next month behind a new studio album, "The Sound The Street The Light," which turned up earlier this month.

The trek kicks off with an appearance at the Nov. 8 Fun Fun Fest in Austin, TX, followed by a Nov. 10 headlining show in Portland, OR, and several other West Coast dates. In January, the band will play a pair of two-night engagements in Boston (1/15-16) and New York (1/29-30). Details are included below.

"The Sound The Speed The Light," the Boston group's fourth studio album (and third since its 2002 reunion) surfaced in early October on the Matador label. The release was preceded by a 7" single, "Innermost," containing a pair of non-album tracks.

Originally formed in 1979, Mission of Burma produced just one EP and one studio album--both highly regarded as post-punk classics--before disbanding in 1983 due to singer/guitarist Roger Miller's bout with tinnitus.

The band reformed earlier this decade with three of its four original members (Bob Weston of Shellac replaced mixer and tape-loop artist Martin Swope, who declined to participate), finally ending a 22-year recording drought with 2004's "ONoffON," and then following it two years later with 2006's "The Obliterati."

On Oct. 4, the band was honored by the Boston City Council with "Mission of Burma Day" in recognition of the group's continuing ability to "make good music while remaining loyal to the city in which they got their start," according to the official proclamation.
