Levon Helm ordered to rest voice, continues touring

Levon Helm , who recently faced a cancer scare after doctors discovered a lesion on his vocal cords, must undergo a period of vocal rest, but is expected to sing again following vigorous work with his vocal coach, according to a press release.

Helm's doctors discovered the lesion after the drummer lost his voice this summer while on tour in support of his second solo album, "Electric Dirt." A biopsy of the lesion, which was removed by laser, revealed no cancer. However, his doctors said he needs strict vocal rest in order to heal.

Losing his voice has not slowed the musician down; Helm and his bandmates continue to perform at his weekly "midnight ramble concerts." The band also continues to meet its concert obligations, including an Oct. 3 performance at the Austin City Limits Festival.

In addition, Helm and band member Larry Campbell recently taped a performance on Elvis Costello's "Spectacle" television show, which will air on the Sundance Channel in January. He also will perform Oct. 9 on Don Imus' new show on the Fox Business Network.
