Jewel heads home to Alaska for acoustic benefit

Jewel will return to her hometown of Homer, AK, later this month to perform a solo acoustic show to benefit the local "Artists in Schools" program.

The singer/songwriter will take the stage Aug. 19 at Homer's Mariner Theater. Atz Lee Kilcher, Jewel's brother, will open the show.

Proceeds from the acoustic performance will go to the Bunnel Street Arts Center's "Artists in Schools" program, which serves more than 1,000 students annually by exposing children of all socioeconomic backgrounds to a variety of art forms and cultures.

"When I was 15, I was accepted to Interlochen, an arts school in Michigan, to pursue my studies in visual art and music," Jewel said in a press release. "My hometown of Homer, AK, helped me raise the $11,000 I needed to go. That was a critical stage in my journey that led me to where I am today. I'm happy to be able to give back and help others in this wonderful community."

Last week, Jewel finished up a month-long US tour behind "Lullaby," her eighth studio album and first-ever independent release. The 15-track record, which features 10 original songs and five childhood standards including "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," surfaced in May.

According to a press release, Jewel is currently writing her next country album, the follow-up to last year's "Perfectly Clear." No word yet on when the new work will hit shelves.
