Pink Floyd to reunite for Live 8 performance
The classic Pink Floyd lineup--which hasn't performed together in more than two decades--has announced plans to play at next month's Live 8 concert in London.
The performance--which will be the first by bassist Roger Waters, guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason and keyboardist Richard Wright since 1981--is part of a multi-city event aimed at raising the public's awareness of global poverty and debt.
"Like most people, I want to do everything I can to persuade the G8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world," Gilmour said in a prepared statement announcing the group's participation in the event. "It's crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations.
"Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if re-forming for this concert will help focus attention, then it's got to be worthwhile."
Waters, the catalyst for two of the band's best known works--1973's "Dark Side of the Moon" and 1979's "The Wall"--left the group on bad terms in the '80s.
Last month, Bob Geldof--co-founder of 1985's Live Aid benefit--announced plans for Live 8. Timed to coincide with the arrival in the U.K. of leaders of the world's richest nations for the G8 summit, the event will comprise free concerts in London, Philadelphia, Paris, Berlin and Rome.
In addition to Pink Floyd, the London show will also feature U2, Coldplay, Velvet Revolver, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Madonna, Annie Lennox, Geldof and others. Acts added to the roster since the event was first announced include Snoop Dogg, Razorlight and Ms. Dynamite.
A full list of performers in each city is included below.
Tickets for the London concert are being distributed to winners of a "text lottery," while those planning to attend in the other cities won't require tickets. More information is posted at the Live 8 website.
Organizers claim that Live 8 will be watched and listened to by more than 2 billion people. BBC-TV and radio will carry the London show, and partner broadcasters in Europe and America--to be announced--will also carry the event.
AOL plans to broadcast all of the concerts via its AOL Music website.
