Santana Tops Grammy List With 10 Nominations

Carlos Santana , whose 30-year career has netted him only one Grammy Award, stands a chance to pick up several more in February. With 10 nominations for his comeback album "Supernatural," the guitar virtuoso easily led the list of nominees for the 42nd Annual Grammy Awards, announced this morning (1/4) by the Recording Academy.

''Supernatural,'' the first new Santana album in seven years, also landed nominations in the Rock Album, Rock Duo or Group, Rock Instrumental, Pop Duo or Group categories. Santana also picked up two nods in the Pop Collaboration With Vocals category.

In 1988, Santana picked up a Grammy in the Best Rock Instrumental category for ''Blues for Salvador.''

R&B trio TLC , who picked up two Grammys in 1995, gathered six nominations, and their album ''Fanmail'' spawned two other nominations in songwriting categories.

Classical music conductor Pierre Boulez received six nominations. Asleep at the Wheel, a longtime fixture on the country music scene, garnered five nominations. Like Santana, Asleep at the Wheel got the attention of the Academy by releasing an album that featured collaborations with many artists outside the group.

Gathering four nominations each were Backstreet Boys , Dixie Chicks, Emmylou Harris, Lauryn Hill and Whitney Houston.

Santana, TLC, and Backstreet Boys are candidates in each of the three most high-profile Grammy categories: Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Album Of The Year. Ricky Martin is up for Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year for the single ''Livin' La Vida Loca.''

The Best New Artist category features multi-platinum teen pop stars Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears and pop songstress in Macy Gray, as well as rock-n-rapper Kid Rock and blues singer/guitarist Susan Tedeschi.

Cher picked up three nominations thanks to her comeback album ''Believe,'' equaling her previous career tally. She has never won a Grammy award.

Bruce Springsteen picked up a nomination in the Best Rock Vocal category for ''The Promise,'' an outtake from the late 1970s that he re-recorded for the 1999's ''18 Tracks.'' In 1998, Springsteen was similarly nominated for a live MTV recording of the 1975 track ''Thunder Road'' that was originally released in Europe in 1993, then resurrected for domestic release by Columbia Records in 1997.

The nominations were announced during a press conference held the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., as well as at smaller press conferences in Nashville and New York. Ballots for the next round of voting will be mailed Jan. 12 to the 10,000 voting members of the more than 14,000 member Recording Academy. .

Winners will be announced during the three-hour Grammy Awards telecast, which will be broadcast live on CBS on Feb. 23. The show will originate from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

In all, there were nearly 500 nominees from 98 categories. A list of nominees in selected categories follows, and a full list is available at the official Grammy website.
