Gorillaz set to come to life in New York

Cartoon band Gorillaz will incorporate live music and 3D animation when it performs a novel staging of material from its 2005 album, "Demon Days," during an April 2-6 engagement at New York's Apollo Theater.

Material from the animated supergroup's latest album will be performed live by guest artists who contributed to the making of "Demon Days," while three-dimensional renderings of the band perform on stage.

Guest performer who will help Gorillaz come to life in New York include De La Soul, Ike Turner, Shaun Ryder, Neneh Cherry and others. Gorillaz co-creator Damon Albarn (lead vocalist of Blur) will also recreate his vocal work from "Demon Days." Tickets for the event go on sale March 10, according to a press release.

Albarn, along with hip-hop producer Dan "The Automator" Nakamura and animator Jamie Hewlett (Tank Girl) are the primary creative forces behind Gorillaz. The group released its self-titled debut album in 2001, which produced a Top Ten single in "Clint Eastwood."

A previous staging of "Demon Days" Nov. 1-5 in Manchester, UK, sold out instantly, according to the group.

Gorillaz has also announced plans to collaborate with animation house Passion Pictures to produce a full live holographic tour for 2007-2008.

"The live Gorillaz shows will be a unique cross between live performance and a theme park experience, with the band fully present onstage, rendered in 3 eye-popping dimensions," said a press release.
