Mariah Carey, John Legend, Kanye West lead Grammy nominees
Mariah Carey , John Legend and Kanye West scored eight nominations apiece for the 48th annual Grammy Awards , tying them for the most nods among a pack nominees that was announced Thursday (12/8).
Carey's take includes Album of the Year and Best Contemporary R&B Album nominations for her career-reviving "The Emancipation of Mimi," and Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best Traditional Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song for that album's "We Belong Together."
West's "Late Registration" will square off against Carey's "Emancipation" in the Album of the Year category and is also up for Best Rap Album, while the set's hit single, "Gold Digger," is in contention for Record of the Year and Best Rap Solo Performance.
West led the pack at the 47th annual Grammy Awards with 10 nominations, and walked away from that ceremony with three trophies.
"If I don't win album of the year, I'm gonna really have a problem with that," West told MTV earlier this week.
In addition to West's "Late Registration" and Carey's "The Emancipation of Mimi," the Album of the Year nominees include U2's "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb," Paul McCartney's "Chaos and Creation in the Backyard" and No Doubt singer Gwen Stefani's solo debut, "Love. Angel. Music. Baby."
Facing off against West and Carey in the Record of the Year category are Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," Stefani's "Hollaback Girl" and Gorillaz's "Feel Good Inc." (featuring De La Soul).
Legend will vie for the Best New Artist award--as will Ciara, Fall Out Boy, Keane and Sugarland--and is also up for Best R&B Album ("Get Lifted"), while his hit single "Ordinary People" is up for Song of the Year, Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song.
Other multiple nominees include 50 Cent, Beyonce Knowles, The Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am and Stevie Wonder, who each scored six nods; Missy Elliott, Alicia Keys, Bruce Springsteen, Gwen Stefani and U2, who are each up for five trophies; and Common, Destiny's Child, Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, Neptunes, Brad Paisley, Phil Tan and Gretchen Wilson, who each earned four nominations.

The 48th annual Grammy Awards ceremony will take place Feb. 8 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, and will air live on CBS-TV.
