Korn gives airborne performance as album release nears
Metal quartet Korn warmed up for its Tuesday (11/29) show in New York City by playing for a group of U.S. soldiers and contest winners during a Monday (11/28) transatlantic flight aboard a private plane.
The eight U.S. soldiers--who have served in either Afghanistan or Iraq and are currently on leave in Europe--and a group of European MTV contest winners were treated to a five-song electric performance that included classic Korn cuts "Blind," "Freak on a Leash" and "Got the Life."
Lead singer Jonathan Davis sang through the airplane's P.A. system, while guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer, bassist Fieldy and drummer David Silveria performed using battery-powered amps, according to the group's publicist.
The in-flight concert was part of a contest in connection with the Dec. 6 release of the band's new album, "See You on the Other Side." The soldiers and contest winners won a trip to New York City to attend Korn's Tuesday (11/29) night performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom, which will be filmed for a half-hour MTV2 special that will premiere Dec. 3 and air again on Dec. 6.
Following the Big Apple performance, Korn will tackle an itinerary that comprises a half-dozen December appearances at holiday-themed radio-station festivals. Details are included below.
"See You on the Other Side" follows 2003's "Take a Look in the Mirror," and is Korn's first album without guitarist Brian "Head" Welch, who quit the group in February. In a statement issued at the time of his departure, Welch said that he had "chosen the Lord Jesus Christ as his savior," and would be "dedicating his musical pursuits to that end."
The group's remaining members--singer Jonathan Davis, guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer, bassist Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu and drummer David Silveria--recorded the new set as a quartet, with Davis serving as co-producer, along with The Matrix and Atticus Ross.
"See You on the Other Side" features the lead-off single "Twisted Transistor," which the group performed on the Nov. 19 episode of "Saturday Night Live." The show, which was hosted by actress Eva Longoria, garnered "SNL" its highest rating of the season, according to a band press release.
