Green Day, others pick up multiple American Music Awards
Green Day , Black Eyed Peas , Kelly Clarkson , Tim McGraw and Destiny's Child were the top winners at Tuesday's (11/22) American Music Awards with two wins apiece.
Green Day's "American Idiot" was named Favorite Album in the Pop/Rock genre, and the pop-punk trio itself was crowned Favorite Artist in the Alternative Music genre (though, at press time, the American Music Awards' website listed Coldplay as the recipient of the latter award).
Black Eyed Peas further cemented their cross-genre status by picking up the Favorite Band, Duo or Group award in both the Pop/Rock and Rap/Hip-Hop genres.
Clarkson claimed the Favorite Artist award in the Adult Contemporary genre, as well as the T-Mobile Text-In Award, which was determined via votes cast at ABC-TV's website and text messages from T-Mobile customers.
Destiny's Child , which recently called it quits, laid claim to the Favorite Band, Duo or Group award in the Soul/Rhythm & Blues genre, and the trio's final album, "Destiny Fulfilled," was named Favorite Album in the same genre.
McGraw led the Country genre with wins for Favorite Male Artist and Favorite Album ("Live Like You Were Dying").
Mariah Carey--who entered the night with four nominations, the most of any of this year's nominees--landed a single trophy for Favorite Female Artist in the Soul/Rhythm & Blues genre.
A complete list of winners is included below.
The awards show, which aired live on ABC-TV, took place at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, and was hosted by Cedric the Entertainer. As always, the ceremony was heavy on live performances, which this year included numbers from Cary, Gwen Stefani, Kenny Chesney, Santana, The Rolling Stones, Pharrell, Lindsay Lohan, Eurythmics, Cyndi Lauper, Sarah McLachlan, Rob Thomas, Keith Urban, Hilary Duff, Los Lonely Boys, Bow Wow and others.
Winners were chosen by the public via a "national sampling of approximately 20,000 [people], taking into account geographic location, age, sex and ethnic origin," according to information posted at the AMA website.
