Springsteen honor shot down by Republican senators

A resolution by New Jersey's two Democratic senators to honor native son Bruce Springsteen was shot down Friday (11/18) by Republican opposition.

GOP leaders refused to consider a resolution co-authored by Sens. Frank Lautenberg and Jon Corzine that would have paid tribute to Springsteen's long career and mark the 30th anniversary of the release of his "Born to Run" album.

Springsteen campaigned in 2004 for Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry, and some Democrats hinted that Republican senators may still hold a grudge against the rocker.

No reason for the refusal was given, said Lautenberg spokesman Alex Formuzis. "Resolutions like this pass all the time in the U.S. Senate, usually by unanimous consent," he said.

Lautenberg told the Associated Press he couldn't understand why anyone would object to the resolution.

"Even if the Republicans don't like (Springsteen's) tunes, I would hope they appreciated his contributions to American culture," Lautenberg told the press agency.
