Lee Ann Womack, Keith Urban lead pack of CMA winners
Country singers Lee Ann Womack and Keith Urban were the only artists to score multiple wins at Tuesday (11/15) night's 39th annual CMA Awards ceremony, with Womack laying claim to three trophies, and Urban racking up a pair.
Womack, who was nominated in six categories, won her first Album of the Year award for "There's More Where That Came From," as well as her second Single of the Year award for "I May Hate Myself in the Morning" and her third Musical Event of the Year award for "Good News, Bad News," a duet with George Strait.
"I love country music," Womack told the crowd. "If you listen to music that doesn't touch you or mean anything to you, listen to country music. We have songs that speak to you and songs that will touch you."
In addition to picking up her trophies, Womack also took to the stage to perform "Twenty Years and Two Husbands Ago."
Urban, meanwhile, landed up his second consecutive CMA Male Vocalist of the Year award and his first Entertainer of the Year Award, making him the only country artist in CMA Awards history to win the Horizon, Entertainer and Male Vocalist of the Year awards, according the Country Music Association; he won the Horizon Award in 2001.
Other winners included last year's Horizon Award winner, Gretchen Wilson , who picked up the Female Vocalist of the Year Award this time around, making her the first solo female artist to perform that back-to-back feat.
"I am going to try not to be a cry baby up here," Wilson said while accepting her award. "I want to thank the fans who make all of this possible."
Wilson also graced the stage during her performance of "I Don't Feel Like Loving You Today," from her album "All Jacked Up."
Rascal Flatts claimed their third consecutive Award for Vocal Group of the Year, and performed their No. 1 hit "Fast Cars & Freedom."
Country duo Brooks & Dunn , who hosted the ceremony and performed their "Hillbilly Deluxe" cut "Believe," also picked up their third Vocal Duo of the Year Award.
The CMA Awards ceremony, which previously had taken place exclusively in the country-music capitol of Nashville, was held at New York City's Madison Square Garden this year, and, in addition to performances from a litany of country acts--including Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss--also featured non-country acts such as Bon Jovi, Paul Simon, Norah Jones, Billy Joel and Elton John, each of whom teamed with a country counterpart for their performances.
CMT plans to rebroadcast the three-hour awards show on Nov. 24, according to a press release.
