Elton John's Las Vegas production comes to TV

NBC-TV will broadcast "Elton John : The Red Piano" on Dec. 14, a special that incorporates performances from John's Las Vegas stage production of the same name.

According to John's official website, 36 high-definition cameras were used to film the special at Las Vegas' Caesars Palace.

In addition to footage of John performing songs from throughout his career, the special will also incorporate videos by production director David LaChapelle, including "Rocket Man," which stars Justin Timberlake as a young Elton John.

"The Red Piano" made its debut in Las Vegas in 2004. John's initial agreement with Caesars called for 75 shows over three years, but the production proved to be a hot seller, prompting the resort to book John for more than the initially planned 25 shows per year.

In June, the singer/pianist signed a new agreement that calls for an additional 150 shows through 2008, according to Caesars. About 25 "The Red Piano" shows are currently on John's schedule for 2006.

The Colosseum is a 4,100-seat theater originally designed to host Celine Dion's production, "... A New Day." "The Red Piano," plays on select nights when Dion is off.
