Juanes comes up big at Latin Grammys

Colombian rocker Juanes added three more trophies to his already-sizeable collection during Thursday's (11/3) sixth-annual Latin Grammy awards ceremony.

Juanes--who, with nine previous wins, already had more Latin Grammys than any other artist in the event's history--was this year's winner in the Best Rock Solo Vocal Album ("Mi Sangre"), Best Rock Song ("Nada Valgo Sin Tu Amor") and Best Music Video ("Volverte A Ver") categories.

In 2003, Juanes swept all five categories in which he had been nominated.

Spaniard Alejandro Sanz --who picked up four awards last year--trailed Juanes with wins in the Record of the Year and Song of the Year categories, both of which he earned for "Tu No Tienes Alma," a cut from his 2004 compilation set "Grandes Exitos 91-04."

Also scoring a pair of wins was Dominican merengue/salsa artist Juan Luis Guerra , who pulled down awards for Best Christian Album ("Para Ti") and Best Tropical Song ("Las Avispas").

The Album of the Year award went to veteran Brazilian singer/keyboardist Ivan Lins for "Cantando Historias."

Spanish alternative singer/songwriter Bebe --who, with five nominations, led the pack of nominees at this year's ceremony--notched a win in only one category: Best New Artist.

One of the trophies for which Bebe was vying--Best Female Pop Vocal Album--went instead to Italian singer Laura Pausini for "Escucha," while Best Male Pop Vocal Album was awarded to Obie Bemudez for "Todo El Ano."

Crossover sensation Marc Anthony, who was in contention for three trophies, landed one for Best Salsa Album ("Valio La Pena").

Producer Gustavo Santaolalla was crowned Producer of the Year for his work on eight different albums, including Juanes' "Mi Sangre."

In all, awards were handed out in 43 categories that touched upon a widely divergent spread of categories and subgenres, including rock, pop, urban, alternative, salsa, tropical, merengue, flamenco, jazz, Christian, children's and classical. A complete list of winners is posted at the official Grammy website.

After spending its first five years airing on CBS, this year's Latin Grammys--which took place at Los Angeles's Shrine Auditorium, ran on the Latin network Univision, and artists accepted their awards in their native languages.
