Beastie Boys concert film hits the big screen
Move over Brad Pitt, Ben Affleck and George Clooney. Mike D, Adrock and M.C.A.--a.k.a., the Beastie Boys --are gunning to be 2006's hot new Hollywood trio.
THINKFilm has announced plans to release a Beastie Boys concert documentary next spring, entitled "Awesome; I F---in' Shot That." The film was directed by Nathaniel Hornblower, who is better known in the band as both M.C.A. and Adam Yauch.
Footage for the film was shot on Oct. 9, 2004, when the the Beastie Boys handed out 50 cameras to audience members at their sold-out performance at New York's Madison Square Garden. The film was photographed, as Yauch described in a press release, by "a bunch of untrained camera operators. But that gives the film sincerity. The people that shot it, were feeling it."
Mark Urman, THINKFilm's theatrical division head, believes that the film does a superb job in capturing the Beastie Boys' concert experience.
"'Awesome' is the only word that can describe the experience of watching this film," Urman said in a press release. "It's totally modern and witty aesthetically, but also fabulous to watch and listen to."
Although the film is scheduled for a wide release in the U.S. in the spring, some savvy fans that keep tabs on the film scene will get the chance to see it before the general public. The distributors plan to screen the film at a number of major film festivals early in 2006.
In other news, the Beasties will mark their 24th anniversary with Tuesday's (11/8) release of "Solid Gold Hits." The set is a 15-track collection of previously released material culled from throughout the trio's catalog. Cuts include "No Sleep 'Til Brooklyn," "Fight for Your Right," "Shake Your Rump," "So Wat'cha Want," "Sabotage" and "Ch-Check It Out."
